Guide to the
Ethiopian canon
Find the books, understand the names and see exactly what is available in this library.
Where to begin
Study Enoch and Jubilees alongside related biblical passages, with five selectable Bible translations, source notes and questions for close reading.
Visions & sacred history
Read 1 Enoch for judgement, angels and hope, then Jubilees for a retelling of Genesis and Exodus shaped by covenant and the calendar.
Worship & community
Explore the Ethiopic Didascalia and Statutes of the Apostles in historic English editions, with introductions and questions for study.
Compare traditions
Use the WEB Deuterocanon and early Christian writings to compare themes and practices, while keeping distinct texts and traditions clearly identified.
Names that need care
- Meqabyan and Maccabees
- The three Ethiopian Meqabyan books are not the Greek Maccabees books in the WEB collection. The source guide links archived free translations and published English editions of Meqabyan.
- Ethiopic Clement and 1–2 Clement
- Ethiopic Clement, also called Qalementos, is a different work. Reading our two Clement texts does not fill that gap.
- Baruch and 4 Baruch
- Rest of the Words of Baruch, often discussed alongside 4 Baruch or the Paralipomena of Jeremiah, is distinct from the WEB Book of Baruch. Greek and Ethiopian forms also need to be distinguished.
- A work and its witnesses
- Horner's volume includes several language traditions; the guide opens the English translation of the Ethiopic text. Likewise, a translation of Hebrew Josippon or a Syriac church order should not be presented as the Ethiopian version.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Bible Project explains these distinctions and available editions.
